Montjuic

The Fortified Mountain Packed Full of Interesting Places to Visit

Montjuic is a prominent hill that can be seen from many parts of Barcelona. Historically, the hill developed as a defensive outpost, the site of numerous fortifications including the present day Castell de Montjuic. The last 100 years have seen many developments on the hill, the whole area is now a fascinating destination to explore from our Barcelona vacation rentals.

Over the years, many fortified positions have been erected on top of Montjuic. However, it was the construction of the Castell de Montjuic in the 17th century that led to the extensive development of the area. Between periods of unrest and war, Montjuic has also been home to the 1929 International Exposition, an event which triggered the construction of numerous architectural, cultural and artistic treasures.

Today, Montjuic is a popular tourist destination and a fantastic area to explore from our Barcelona vacation rentals. There are plenty of historic sites to discover including the Castell de Montjuic, the spectacular Palau Nacional, the Poble Espanyol (a traditional Spanish village built in differing architectural styles), and the 1929 Olympic Stadium.

For art lovers staying in our Barcelona vacation rentals, the National Art Museum of Catalonia (housed in the Palau Nacional) is a must-see destination, as is the Fundació Joan Miro which is a showcase collection of the works of Catalan artist Joan Miro. There are plenty more excellent museums in the area including the museum of ethnology, the Olympic museum and the Catalan museum of archaeology.

Also of note amongst the many attractions of Montjuic is the Cementiri del Sud-Oest, a cemetery where many of Barcelona’s famous names have been laid to rest (such as Joan Miro and dancer Carmen Amaya). The botanical gardens provide another great destination, as does the Font Màgica (Magic Fountain). The Font Màgica is perfect for families staying in our Barcelona vacation rentals; the incredible fountain display, with its combination of light, colour, music and water, is sure to please both adults and children alike.

With so many things to see and do at Montjuic, visitors should set aside at least one full day for exploring the hill. Montjuic is easily reached from our Barcelona vacation rentals by taking the number 61 bus from Placa d’Espanya. Alternatively (and more fun), the top of the hill can be reached by taking the Funicular de Montjuic, a funicular railway that runs as part of the Barcelona Metro system (connecting from the Paral•lel station, L2 and L3). Then hop on the gondola lift to reach the castle, and take in some spectacular views of Barcelona.

Buy your Montjuic Cable Car tickets online in advance, to avoid queuing when you get there.
