Casa Batllo is a truly fascinating place to visit from our vacation rentals. Barcelona was the home of architect Antoni Gaudi and the Casa Batllo is one of his uniquely stylized works. Known locally as the Casa dels Ossos (the House of Bones), the house is an incredibly organic, visceral piece of architectural design.
The house was originally built in 1877 for a regular middle-class family. In 1904, however, Gaudi, alongside Josep Maria Jujol, began a restoration project which would radically alter the building. With strong elements of Art Nouveau and Modernism (and Gaudi’s own unique style), the house is now a remarkable sight. One thing immediately evident to any visitors staying in our
vacation rentals, Barcelona and Gaudi make quite a combination.
Straight lines seem to have been deliberately avoided in the construction of the Casa Batllo. The roof is arched (and likened by many to the back of a dinosaur) and the windows are irregular ovals set into the organically sculpted stone work. The attention to colour and light is also impressive, shades and textures blending into each other to create the fluid interior. Gaudi took marine life as one of his influences, a fact that can be seen in both the shapes and coral colours of the exterior and interior.
The building is located at number 43 Passeig de Gràcia in the Eixample district of Barcelona. To get there from our
vacation rentals, Barcelona subway trains are perhaps the best option. Take the Green Line (L3) to the Passeig de Gràcia subway station. Once there, be sure to take the correct exit onto Calle Aragó-Rambla Catalunya - from here the Casa Batllo is only a 1 minute walk away at most.
The entrance fee is €16.50 per person including an audio guide. Opening hours are from 9.00am until 8.00pm every day although the building sometimes shuts at 2.00pm if various rooms are not available. Casa Batllo generally only closes on Christmas day and New Year’s Day.
Weekdays are often the best days to visit from our
vacation rentals. Barcelona is a popular weekend holiday destination and the Casa Batllo can be crowded on Saturdays and Sundays.
