Rembrandtplein

People Watching from the Bar Terrace

Rembrandtplein is one of the major squares in central Amsterdam. The square, named after famous Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn, has become one of the capital’s night-life hotspots, and is a fun destination to visit from our holiday apartments. Amsterdam has a colourful and vibrant atmosphere, and the Rembrandtplein is a great place to sit and watch the festivities.

The square began life as a butter market before transforming into one of Amsterdam’s club and bar hotspots. The modern day history of the square has seen one recent addition: the statue of Rembrandt in the centre of the square was joined by 22 bronze figures, each taken from the artist’s most famous work The Night Watch. The figures, created by Russian artists Mikhail Dronov and Alexander Taratynov, were moved to New York in 2009.

Numerous cafe terraces provide plenty of people-watching opportunities in the square, while various bars and a handful of large clubs are on hand for late-night revellers. For first time visitors staying in our holiday apartments, Amsterdam night-life in the Rembrandtplein can be quite an eye-opener. The square can become quite raucous when in full flow; the bars become packed with locals singing along to Dutch folk songs, tourists wander around in search of the perfect bar, and Amsterdam’s famously liberal attitude soon becomes clear for all to see.

Two recommended establishments on the square are De Kroon, a traditional cafe built in 1898, and Schiller bar, a friendly set-up which is perfect for having a chat with the locals. Just off the square are some of Amsterdam’s best know gay venues, many of which are on Halvemaansteeg, a street packed with popular gay bars.

If you find yourself in need of a break from all of the bars and discos, then consider taking a tour of the Rembrandtplein diamond factory. Learning the diamond manufacturing process is always an interesting side trip for people staying in our apartments. Amsterdam souvenir shops can also be found in the square, if looking for slightly less expensive keepsakes.

To get to the square from our apartments, Amsterdam trams and buses are probably the best option. Rembrandtplein is linked to Muntplein by Reguliersbreestraat and to the Blauwbrug (Blue Bridge) by Amstelstraat. From the Muntplein take either tram number 4, 9 or 14, all of which stop at Rembrandtplein.
