The Leidseplein is one of the central squares in Amsterdam and a thriving nightlife hotspot. In the evenings, both tourists and locals flock towards the Leidseplein to make the most of a wide array of bars, restaurants, street-side cafes, theatres and clubs. For those looking for some Dutch nightlife while staying in our apartments, Amsterdam certainly comes to life on the Leidseplein.
The Leidseplein square first attracted crowds back in the 17th century. These were not late night revellers, however, but farmers and peasant workers leaving their wagons in the square before entering the city centre. The name of the square itself derives from the Leidsepoort, the place that formerly marked the end of the road from Leiden to Amsterdam.
Today, the Leidseplein is nearly always abuzz with activity. The square is an important tram stop, and many of the people jumping off here are looking to spend the night in the many clubs and bars in the square and surrounding streets. If looking for late night entertainment when staying in our
apartments, Amsterdam nightlife doesn’t get much better than in the Leidseplein.
Street entertainers such as jugglers, musicians and fire-eaters mingle amongst the crowds until the early hours. Henna tattoo artists, meanwhile, offer their temporary designs to the gathered revellers. A good selection of bars, restaurants, cafes and coffee shops can be found around the square. Check out the Grand Cafe Heineken Hoek, the Bulldog Leidseplein coffee shop and the nearby De Blonde Hollander (good for Dutch food).
The Stadsschouwburg municipal theatre is a great spot to catch a play, a musical or some cabaret. Two rock music venues, the Paradiso and Melkweg, are great for fans of heavier music. The Leidsepleintheater, meanwhile, offers plenty of English-language comedy shows. When visiting the Leidseplein from our
apartments, Amsterdam casinos and movie theatres can also be found in the area.
The Leidseplein is located in the southwest of the central district of Amsterdam (northeast of the Singelgracht Canal). Lying as it does on the crossroads of the Leidsestraat, Marnixstraat and the Weteringschans, the square is easily found from any of our apartments. Amsterdam trams make frequent stops at the square and taxis go to and from the nearby taxi rank.
The best time to visit the Leidseplein is after night falls and the square really comes to life. There is one thing to remember when visiting the square from our apartments: Amsterdam, like any city, has its share of pickpockets. Keep your valuables safe and you will have a truly memorable night.
