The Resistance Museum

A Fascinating Insight of the Struggle Under Occupation

The fascinating Dutch Resistance Museum tells the story of the Dutch people during World War II. The Verzetsmuseum, as it is know by the Dutch, was chosen as the best historical museum in the Netherlands. If you want to learn more about the history of the Netherlands while staying in our apartment rentals, Amsterdam in the 1940s is brought vividly to life in the Verzetsmuseum.

The Netherlands were occupied by Nazi Germany from 14 May 1940 until 5 May 1945. German oppression dominated the nation, and the Dutch people were to face a dilemma of unimaginable proportions. Resistance was one option, but the perils involved were countless. Collaboration with the Nazis was also an option with its own set of risks.

The Resistance Museum strives to portray these terrible days, and the trials and choices faced by each and every citizen. The permanent museum exhibition recreates the streets of Amsterdam during the occupation. Photographs, posters, films and objects from the period further serve to give visitors a special insight into the Holocaust, Nazi persecution and Dutch heroism.

The Plancius building, in which the museum is located, is in the Plantage district of Amsterdam, not far from the Maritime Museum and the Jewish Historical Museum. Just across the street from the museum is Amsterdam’s Artis Zoo; for families staying in our apartment rentals, Amsterdam Zoo is a good destination to visit after the museum.

The museum is easily reached from our various holiday rentals. Amsterdam tram number 9 runs to the museum from Central Station, or take tram 14 from Dam Square. Alternatively, take the metro (subway 51, 53 or 54) and get out at Waterlooplein. From here it is a 10 minute walk to the museum.

The Resistance Museum is open daily throughout the year with the exception of 1st January, 30th April and 25th December. Opening hours are from 10.00am until 5.00pm Tuesday to Friday and from 11.00am until 5.00pm on Saturday, Sunday and Monday (and public holidays). Admission is €7.50 for adults, €4.00 for children aged between 7 and 15 and free for children of 6 and under.

From our fantastic holiday rentals, Amsterdam can be enjoyed and explored at your leisure. To gain a deeper understanding of the Netherlands during the occupation, there is no better place to go than the truly memorable Dutch Resistance Museum.
