Amsterdam Museum

A Highly Interesting Museum with a Rich and Storied Past

Located in the heart of Amsterdam, the Amsterdam Museum is a great attraction if you want to learn about Amsterdam’s colourful past in an entertaining way. The museum has a huge collection, with up to 70,000 objects on display dating back to material from the Middle Ages. Part of the museum’s charm is the building itself as it was a children’s orphanage up to 1960, with many of its pieces being original furnishings from when it was an orphanage. The museum’s history is a strong part of its appeal and why it is a great afternoon out from one of our Amsterdam apartments.

The orphanage was built in 1580 and remained intact until it was modified to turn it into a tourist attraction. The museum was originally called the Amsterdam Historical Museum before the name was altered. Perhaps the most appealing aspect of the museum, unlike some of the other historical museums, is how entertaining and interesting even in the modern age, truly bringing Amsterdam’s history to life.

Amsterdam Museum is open Mondays to Friday from 10am-5pm, with admission fees currently 10 euros for adults and 5 euros for children, though children under 6 can get in for free. When here, the outdoor café is a great place to take a break and admire the historic architecture of the intimate courtyard with wine tasting also available if you enquire. The shop is also worth a visit and a great chance to take home a unique souvenir from this inspiring museum.

We have Amsterdam apartments that are within walking distance of the museum, though if you are further outside of the city centre there are numerous trams you can catch to get here efficiently and quickly. The Amsterdam Museum is a perfect example of what makes Amsterdam such a charming and unique city and allows you to be educated in an entertaining and interesting way while you’re at it.

Buy your Amsterdam Museum tickets online in advance, to avoid queuing when you get there.
