Bloemenmarkt (Floating Flower Market)
For a truly unique experience during any self-catering Amsterdam holiday, take a trip to the Bloemenmarkt, the world’s only floating flower market.
Set on the Singel Canal, the floating market is one of the most fragrant and colourful locations in Amsterdam.
The market developed on the Singel Canal(one of the oldest Amsterdam canals), in 1862. Flowers were transported to the site by barge from surrounding horticultural areas in order to be sold in the city centre. The site soon became established as one of the principal flower markets in Amsterdam, and the unique floating stalls have ever since attracted both locals and tourists alike. For gardeners staying in self-catering Amsterdam apartments, a trip to the market is a must.
Fresh flowers are still delivered to the market every day, with the only difference being that the delivery is made by van rather than by barge or boat. A selection of 15 florists and specialist garden shops can be found in the market and the quality is always top-class. Traditional Dutch tulips and geraniums can be found in abundance alongside a plethora of other flowers and bulbs. In December the market becomes a sea of green as Christmas trees take precedence over flowers.
Dutch souvenirs can be bought in the market, making it a great destination when looking for that special gift to take home from your self-catering Amsterdam vacation. Bulbs can also be bought ready for export, perfect for green fingered visitors with gardens back home.
The floating flower market is located on the Singel Canal (in Amsterdam’s southern canal belt) between the Koningsplein and the Muntplein. Trips along the canal are a great way to see more of Amsterdam, making this an interesting way to get to the Bloemenmarkt. The canal runs from the IJ bay (near Central Station) to the Muntplein. Public canal boats ply this route making it a good option for getting to the market from various self-catering Amsterdam apartments.
The market opens at 9.00am and closes at 5.30pm from Monday through to Saturday. On Sundays the market opens at 11.00am and closes at 5.30pm. The Bloemenmarkt is covered so rain is not a problem. Whatever the weather, take a trip to the flower market and decorate your self-catering Amsterdam apartment with some fragrant and stunning fresh flowers.
