Albert Cuyp Market
The Albert Cuyp Market is the busiest street market in the Netherlands and one of the largest outdoor markets in Europe. A trip to the market from any of our apartments in Amsterdam makes for a great day out and provides the perfect opportunity to combine culture with a bit of shopping.
The market began life as an uncontrolled collection of street vendors and traders. As trade grew the market became increasingly disordered and chaotic. In order to regain a sense of order, the Dutch government chose to set up an official market in 1905. Initially held only on Saturdays, the market soon became a daily event.
The market continues to be a hive of activity today. Traffic is now no longer allowed to pass through the market streets during trading hours, but the bustling nature of the area has certainly not been lost.
Visitors from our apartments in Amsterdam can expect to find a huge range of products for sale at the Albert Cuyp Market. Traditional local produce (such as vegetables, fruit, cheese and fish) can be found alongside clothing, cosmetics, cameras and various other items. The market also has a strong multicultural element; Moroccan, Surinamese, Antillean and Turkish products can be found in abundance, adding to the market’s already intriguing mix of goods.
Many great traditional Dutch and ethnic restaurants can be found tucked away behind the market. Good food and drink can be found in these establishments, many of which offer outstanding value for money. It is worth spending some time in the market when visiting from our apartments in Amsterdam. There is plenty to explore and there are many great bargains to be found.
Due to the quality products available at the market (and the low prices), the area can become very crowded, especially on Saturdays and bright, sunny days. If looking for atmosphere then this is the time to visit, otherwise weekdays could be better. The market opens Monday to Saturday from 9.30am and generally closes at around 5.00pm (sometimes earlier in winter or during particularly bad weather).
The Albert Cuyp Market is easily reached from any of our apartments in Amsterdam. The market is located on Albert Cuypstraat, between Van Woustraat and Ferdinand Bolstraat. These streets are situated in the De Pijp area in the southern section of Amsterdam, directly bordering the city centre. Trams and buses run to the area from Central Station.
