Uitmarkt
Uitmarkt is the largest and most spectacular festival in Amsterdam. Literally meaning “out market,” or outdoor market, Uitmarkt suggests that culture is best celebrated in the open air through music, dance, theatre, and comedy shows. Uitmarkt is an event in the last week of August each year that traditionally begins a new cultural season in the Netherlands, a fantastic time to enjoy Amsterdam apartments.
Thousands of locals and guests come to view over 450 shows and 2,000 artists in Amsterdam’s outdoor squares. From jazz to hip-hop, Uitmarkt has something for everyone. Even kids are catered to at Uitmarkt Junior, a combination of movies, workshops, activities, and performances at Vondelpark. Uitburo’s International Service Point, located near the Van Gogh Museum, offers information needed for a pleasant visit, including maps and English language guides.
The first Uitmarkt festival was organized in 1979 by Amsterdam Uitburo, meaning “out bureau,” a group that supports several outdoor events in Amsterdam and continues to run Uitmarkt each year. Uitmarkt has remained a free event for several years because artists and organisations choose to donate time and energy to make the event possible.
Amsterdam offers small, yet fantastic, outdoor shows all summer long in Vondelpark, offering excellent activities for guests that choose to stay on holiday for a longer period in an Amsterdam apartment. Further detailed information and listings for the current year on performances at Uitmarkt and in Vondelpark are available at iamsterdam.com.
