De Pijp
Just south of Amsterdam’s city centre is the region of De Pijp, a former working-class region that is now a hotbed for students and young professionals. The area is most famous for the Albert Cuyp Market, open every day except for Sundays for tourists to visit. The region has many streets named after famous Dutch painters such as Vincent Van Gogh and Frans Hals, and are within walking distance of each other and many of our Amsterdam apartments.
Over the past few centuries, De Pijp has traditionally been a working-class area that was built to populate the influx of immigrants flocking to Amsterdam. However, in recent decades the area has attracted young professionals and students too, making it a socially friendly place with numerous restaurants, bars and clubs throughout the region, many of which are reasonably priced, as are our Amsterdam apartments.
The Albert Cuyp Market contains a variety of food such as fish, vegetables and fruit from countries such as Morocco and Turkey and generally for very reasonable prices, or if you want more traditional Dutch cuisine you can try the famous stroopwafels that are prepared by some market vendors. You can also visit the old Heineken factory for a guide tour, which will cost around 8 euros and allow you to see the history of one of the world’s most famous beers. The cafés that Amsterdam is famous for are scattered around, and with the friendly locals it allows you to get a taste of the Dutch way of life and culture.
Amsterdam’s tram line runs through De Pijp, so getting around is fairly easy and makes the location very accessible from one of our Amsterdam apartments. Although famous for its market, De Pijp is a contemporary region for young people and is the perfect base to explore the wonderful city of Amsterdam from.
