Amstel River

A Picturesque and Affluent Area along the River Amstel

The area around the River Amstel, locally referred to as ‘Amstelbuurt’, is an affluent district within the Dutch capital. The Amstel River, from which the name Amsterdam derived from, is the widest channel in the Amsterdam canal structure with beautiful bridge crossings, including the oldest drawbridge, Magere Brug' and the lovingly restored Blue Bridge.

Along the River Amstel, this picturesque area has an endless amount of exquisitely quaint old houses and buildings, houseboats and charming little bridges. The area is a desirable location for local residents and for Amsterdam holiday apartments, and a stroll down the river is a must, especially in the evening when the riverside and bridges are illuminated by small lamps.

A walk down along the Amstel pathway takes about an hour, and there are many points of interest along the way, including the Hermitage Museum, the Amsterdam Museum, and Waterlooplein. This stretch of river is also home to the most expensive hotel in Amsterdam, the distinctive Amstel Hotel. The Theatre Carre is also located along the Amstel, featuring musical performances, magicians and comedy acts.

Amstel River is a great location for your Amsterdam holiday apartment, offering easy access to many of Amsterdam’s most popular landmarks and attractions. The area offers excellent shopping opportunities, with many of the surrounding streets boasting quaint boutiques and speciality shops. If you’re looking to stop for a coffee break, or eat out for lunch or dinner, there are an endless selection of restaurants and cafes available along the river and in the surrounding alleyways.
